Ankle fractures & fixation

Understand fracture stability, surgical fixation and rehabilitation after a broken ankle.

Supervised rehabilitation for ankle fractures & fixation

About the condition

Ankle fractures range from stable injuries to displaced or unstable patterns. The number and position of fractures and any syndesmosis involvement change treatment.

Treatment options

An assessment and imaging establish the plan. Some fractures are managed in a cast or boot; others need surgery. Use only the weight-bearing permission provided for your fracture.

Surgical considerations

Fixation restores alignment and stability. Wounds, hardware and associated injuries affect progression. A general timetable from another person’s fracture may not apply.

Rehabilitation principles

First follow protection and wound instructions. As permitted, address stiffness, walking and strength, then rebuild balance and activity tolerance.

Recovery expectations

Swelling and stiffness may persist after early bone healing. Return to work and sport depends on both healing and function. Increasing pain, altered sensation or concerning wound changes need medical review.

Evidence context

AAOS and NHS guidance describe different fracture pathways. Clinical and imaging review determine when loading can safely change.
